Whether you’re a service member or a spouse juggling household goods, pets, kids or your second vehicle in preparation for a cross country trip to the new duty station, getting to your pcs order can be a daunting prospect. While the government will pay to transport ONE automobile from an overseas duty station (OCONUS), it generally does not pay to transport a Service Member's car when the move is within the country (CONUS). So if you or a family member is not in a position to drive your vehicle to your new base, an experienced military auto transport company is often the best option.
Military members who make Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves from one duty station to another do have some entitlements, and there is a limited authority for POV (Privately Owned Vehicle) car transport within the CONUS when the service member is medically unable to drive, has a homeport change, or there is not enough time to drive. The government also pays for car transport for a Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employee if you (a) Have been transferred in the government’s interest, (b) Are a new appointee, or (c) are a student trainee assigned to your first PDS. Further, you are entitled to POV transportation upon retirement or separation, to your authorized Home of Selection under the JTR, Paragraph (Para) 5068-A.1, or Home of Record (HOR)/Place from Which Called (or Ordered) to Active Duty under JTR Paragraph 5066. The time limit for shipping a POV is 1 year from the date of retirement or 180 days from the date of separation with pay.
The legal authority for POV shipment is 10 USC 2634(h), 10 USC 2634, and 37 USC 406(h) -- but even if you’re paying out of pocket for POV auto transport, you’ll find great value in our shipping quotes.
1. We understand military service members’ auto transport needs and values
An important part of your job as an active member of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard is being able to respond quickly to a Permanent Change of Station order, whether it’s a cross-country relocation or just 500 miles away. We are a auto transport company that understands the challenges and sacrifices made by the military life, and also know you’re probably on a fairly tight stipend from the government. So we work with military families like yours to make military auto transport as affordable as it can be whether you will get a reimbursement or not. With a network of >8,500 carriers, we can mobilize a car transporter to most locations in a very reasonable timeline.
Whether you’re the military spouse responsible for the move to the next duty station while your partner is in service, or you’re a single Service Member being deployed overseas – perhaps shipping your car for storage with a family member while you’re abroad – or you’re arriving back in the US after deployment and ready to get your car back to your new home or to the next duty station, moving is a challenge.
Some bases are way off the beaten-path, and finding a carrier that is able to pick-up or deliver there in a timely manner can be time-consuming: especially if you’re on a tight schedule, trying to coordinate precise dates for pickup and drop-off or when rapid deployment is at hand. You need a simple, easy process that doesn’t take much time. You need reliability. And you want value: the best service at the most affordable price. Ask about our military car shipping discounts we have as a small way to show our gratitude.
2. How much does it cost to ship vehicles for military members?
Military car shipping costs ~$1.40 per mile for 1-500 miles. So, a 350 mile trip would cost $490. The longer the distance, the lower the price: moving it ~1000 miles drops the rate to $1 a mile, or $1000. Coast-to-coast military car transport can be as little as $.60 cents per mile. Military auto shipping quotes vary based on vehicle size, speed of delivery, availability in rural location, and seasonal demand.

We also provide shipping for your personal operating vehicle like motorcycle shipping and military truck shipping – and you’d be surprised at how many people ship old military jeeps and other military vehicles. We can even arrange to transport decommissioned military tanks.
3. How long does it take to ship a car when transferred?
POV shipping for service members takes between 1-6 calendar days from the date your vehicle is picked up to when it’s dropped off. A driver usually covers about 500 miles per day. The first available pickup date is typically 2-7 business days after an order is booked, and express car transport is usually available within 24-72 hours depending on your location. As a car shipping company we understand the need for a clear schedule and do our best to give you specific times and dates. We have the utmost respect for our active military and veterans.

We care about your success, and offer a compilation of resources others have found useful over the years. None of these are related to your auto shipping needs, but we thought you’d appreciate some of these tools.
• Make the most of wherever you are on your journey: whether you’re just getting started, getting home, or taking that victory lap, be ready for your next step with tips from Military OneSource for every phase of deployment.
• The successful movement of your POV is not a matter of chance. As with all things military, it’s the result of preparation and planning. If you think you may be medically eligible to ship a POV in the CONUS, check out the handbook provided by US Transcom or Contact your local Transportation Office (TO) or Personal Property Shipping Office (PPSO).
• The Personal Property Counseling Checklist ensures the member, dependent, and government employee has been briefed properly on the movement of their personal property within the Defense Transportation System. This checklist may also be used in determining validity of claims for damage and improper shipments and any third party responsibility.
• For deploying service members and families, there are resources available to help you during your transitions -- here's a rundown of help programs by service.
• Deployments are tough on everyone, from the spouse to children to the family pet. BlueStarFamily.org’s resources, prepared by military spouses and service members, can make your family's deployment easier.
6. How to move a car for a member of the military during a PCS: can you pack items in the vehicle or the trunk?
The short answer is no. The FMCSA which inspects car transporters and ensures public safely permits only vehicle-related items to be included, such as child car seats, car covers, and parts or tools related directly to the vehicle itself. Regulations prohibit including luggage, personal items, household items or anything else that’s not related to the car, in order to avoid excess weight and because no car carrier in the US is licensed to carry household goods, or obtain insurance on those items for your protection. So it’s best to include household goods with the shipment of your other personal belongings during your PCS move.
Military PCS vehicle shipping is one of our specialties, and we have a dedicated Military Shipping POV division. We can pick up and deliver to almost every military base or installation in the country. While we can’t drive onto the base itself, we’ll get the transport truck as close to the gates or entrance of the base as possible – or the driver will arrange to meet you at a nearby shopping center or public parking space that’s both safe and convenient. See why our military car shipping program is among the best in the auto transport industry Continental US, and ask about our car transport military discount we have for all members of the US Armed Forces as a way to show our gratitude.
