SUV Shipping: Top 3 Questions to Ask
When you need to ship an sport utility vehicle instead of your sedan, you’re looking for the ideal balance between reliability and great value.Whether you’ve just bought your dream vehicle at a dealership, found a new Land Rover or Ford Expedition online, or you’re shipping a Toyota Highlander as part of a family relocation, you want it to be affordable and have no surprises, from the best SUV transport company you can find.
If shipping a sport utility vehicle is new to you, a couple of insights can help – because not all SUV transporters are alike. The most dependable auto shipping companies orchestrate a high volume of vehicle transports each day, and have established a large network of the best drivers across country. They have great reviews verified on Google and other platforms, and know the details of your specific make and model.
In addition to asking how-much and how-long, 3 other important questions to ask of each company are: (1) What insurance is included when transporting, (2) What if anything is NOT included in moving costs (to avoid any surprises), and (3) How long is your car transport quote valid?
How much does it cost to ship my SUV?
SUV transport costs ~$1.40 per mile for 1-500 miles. So, a 350 mile trip would cost $490. The longer the distance, the lower the price: shipping a larger vehicle ~1000 miles drops it to $1 a mile, or $1000. SUV transport coast-to-coast can be as little as $.60 cents per mile.
Enclosed shipping costs 50% more and is typically recommended only for vehicles worth more than $70,000. Express shipping is also available for customers who are in a crunch, or who need a guaranteed Pickup date or Drop-off date and who may find the additional 30% optional cost to be a good investment, given the unique money-back guarantee. Of course, shipping rates can vary based on vehicle size, whether it currently runs, as well as seasonal demand - with larger vehicles and heavier vehicles costing more.
When looking at shipping services for larger vehicles that are not a sedan, it’s important to compare apples-to-apples. For example, prices quoted on this website are all-inclusive. No surprises: no taxes, fuel-surcharges, or any additional fees. Your vehicle is covered for 100% of its value, with zero deductible to you in the unlikely event of a claim.
The only possible adjustment to the instant quote our system generates may be if your vehicle has special modifications vs. the factory base model – for example, roof rack, ladder rack, a lift kit or oversized tires. Since these take up additional room on a truck, please mention this to your Transport Coordinator so that we can be sure to dispatch just the right Carrier for your four-wheeler.
Our auto shipping quotes are guaranteed for a full 14 days (while most transport companies honor prices for 7 days). So even if fuel prices go up, or there is a scheduling crunch where demand suddenly pushes rates up, we eat any additional costs.
“I needed to replace our old SUV which took a beating in our Chicago winters. We were on a tight budget and found a pre-owned one in Florida we liked. When I started shopping around online for the shipping, Easy Car Shipping was competitive on the price and helpful in coordinating with the seller’s busy schedule. Actually, the truck driver had to wait 2 hours for the seller to come home from work, but he didn’t complain or charge us extra. We love the Jeep and the vehicle transport services we got.” George Karavidas, 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Tampa to Chicago
How long does it take to ship a SUV?

Delivery takes between 1-6 calendar days from the date your car is picked up to when it’s dropped off. A driver usually covers about 500 miles per day. The first available pickup date for SUV transports is typically 2-7 business days after an order is placed, and express SUV transport is usually available within 24-72 hours. Reliable delivery is our hallmark, with an on-time track record of 83%. That’s better than most airlines!
Factors that affect the length of time it takes to transport a vehicle include the time of year that shipping is required, and any back-log related to weather, holidays, or seasonal demand. In any case, the bottom line is that whatever your constraints are, we probably have a way to accommodate your needs. Most customers contact us 7-10 days before they need vehicle shipping -- but whether you have a week, a month or even just a day, we make it happen for you.
“We recently became snowbirds and didn’t want to drive all the way down to Florida. I talked to some friends and they recommended Easy Car Shipping because they had good experiences and great service n the past with them. They picked up my vehicle right before Thanksgiving and they were able to hold the car for delivery until I arrived in Florida 6 days later. It worked out perfectly. I look forward to an easy transport again when I go back to NY.” Charles Cosner, 2013 Lexus RX 350, Long Island to West Palm Beach
Should I consider enclosed SUV transport?
When you’re shipping a luxury SUV such as a Porsche Cayenne, a Mercedes GLS-Class, or an Audi Q7, you may want to want to consider which class of service would suit you best. Open transport is very reliable, and the most cost-effective option for a typical Jeep, Chevy Tahoe, Ford Explorer, or GMC Yukon.
But when you’ve just bought a new Cadillac Escalade for over $70,000 or some other top-rated luxury SUV, the option of “first class” service offered by enclosed trailers can provide additional peace of mind. Many dealerships choose enclosed SUV shipping to preserve the gleam on that new Range Rover or BMW X5 car delivery, and to make the best impression with a new buyer. But even a Chevy Tahoe or Acura MDX sometimes rates the level of personalized service offered on enclosed trucks, which typically carry just 2-6 vehicles at a time.
Can I pack items in the vehicle during shipping?
Actually, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration doesn’t allow for that. By law, Carriers that haul vehicles aren’t allowed to carry non-vehicle related items. So we ask that you clear out the vehicle before we pick it up, so that no personal items are left in the vehicle.
Also, if it’s clean, the driver can more easily confirm with you that the car has no dings or scratches on it, which is what he records in the Inspection Report. It’s also called a Bill of Lading: a one-page document that not only validates the condition of the car at both pick-up and delivery, but also spells out the specifics of your order. Our expert Transport Coordinators are available to answer any question that may arise, from prior to pick-up until well after your vehicle arrives at its destination.
“I was being relocated to a base in Texas and needed to get our family vehicle out there. The military gave me an allowance and I was happy to find Easy Car Shipping offered a bit of a military discount, as well as to drop my vehicle so close to the base. Given the other stress of moving all our stuff again, I’m glad at least this part was so smooth. When I have to transfer again I’ll be using these guys for sure.” Juan Gonzalez, 2009 Ford Expedition, San Diego to Waco, TX
Why Easy Car Shipping is a top SUV transport company nationwide
Some say our 4.8 star reviews speak for themselves. Easy Car Shipping is a favorite of SUV dealers across the country and is rated tops among SUV vehicle shippers because of our proven track record for striking the best balance between service and affordability. While one can always find some lower-cost option, you’ve probably seen how one typically “gets what you pay for”. Our prices are competitive – but what we pride ourselves on is service, reputation and repeat customers.
For each order, we assign a dedicated Transport Coordinator -- so you speak to the same person when you call, rather than simply the next available operator. And most of our Transport Coordinators have direct hands-on experience with lots of SUV models, so they’re better able to anticipate potential questions or issues and head off a surprise. Our claims rate is less than 1 in 1,200 deliveries (that’s less than 0.1%), which is one of the lowest in the industry.
SUV deliveries can be more challenging than a typical auto transport, due to size, weight and height profiles – and many SUVs have additional modifications. We accommodate all sizes, from mid-size to cross-over to extended-length sports utility vehicles. Even if it’s your “baby” – a 1963 Jeep Wagoneer or a rebuilt Jimmy from the ‘70s – your relocation is gets from point A to point B without a hitch (pardon the pun). That’s why our great service tops “transport SUV” metrics - putting us among the best auto transport companies in the contiguous United States.
